The community gathered today at Bayview Funeral Home to remember Judy Carroll, a member of Glenville UMC. Pastor Charles led the service with Pastor Randy Cirksena offering the reflection and Pastor Galen Spinler sharing a reading.

Pastor Charles conducted the internment at Greenwood Cemetery in Glenville.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

Wesley found Mary Bosanquet Fletcher to be a class leader and preacher who possessed both gifts and grace. He did not tell her to go home.

Sat. 10th - I had the pleasure of an hour’s conversation with Mrs. Fletcher. She appears to be swiftly growing in grace and ripening for a better world. I encouraged her to do all the good she could during her short stay in Bristol. Accordingly, she met, in the following week, as many of the classes as her time and strength would permit; and her words were as fire, conveying both light and heat to the hearts of all that heard her. - John Wesley (journal, March 10, 1787)

Sun. 18th - In the evening we had a love feast, at which Mrs. Fletcher simply declared her present experience. I know no one that is so changed for the better in a few years, even in her manner of speaking. It is now smooth, easy, and natural, even when the sense is deep and strong. - John Wesley (journal, March 18, 1787)

+Bob & Gloria S. celebrate the visit of Mary & Dave and the school reunion they attended this weekend.

+Kraig & Korla S. are happy to have been able to tend to grandchildren and make it back home after driving through "The Cities."

+Nancy & Roy B. are thankful for the help from family at this weekend's sale at their home in Gordonsville. It was the first time in two years everyone was together.

+Belinda A. is blessed this weekend to be attending Mission u at Camp Koronis in Paynesville.

+We were blessed to have Savanah and Reece, grandchildren of Renea & Jim H. with us today.

+We give thanks that Bob S. was able to get the portable AC installed this morning in the sanctuary! Next week will be much nicer for everyone!!!

Concerns:

+Pastor Charles asks for prayers for Judy C. following her death on Friday and for her family. The funeral will be at Bayview Funeral Home on Friday (time to be announced).

+Pastor Charles asks for prayers for Dale S. as he receives medical care. Prayers are also asked for Dale's cats who remain in the home in Glenville.

+Bob S. asks for prayer for a friend who is recovering from heart surgery.

'Tis, perhaps, one of the most difficult things in the world to preserve a devout and serious temper of mind in the midst of much worldly business, and therefore I would advise that no person voluntarily involve themselves in or take upon them the management of more business than they can throw into such a method as may not distract their thoughts or take up too much their time which was given us to work out our salvation. Do Some Congregations Have a Chrysler Dealership Mindset from Yesteryear?

Interesting entry by Dr. Lovett Weems in a recent edition of United Methodist Insight. came across a magazine article recently that featured a picture of a luxury car along with the article title. Despite the car, I initially misread the title. Here is the actual title: THE MAINSTREAM CAR BRANDS SELLING THE FEWEST VEHICLES IN AMERICA

You can see where my mind tends to focus because as soon as I saw “Mainstream,” I assumed it was about mainstream denominations that reach the fewest people in America! My immediate fear was that the winner of this distinction might be the United Methodist Church. I was relieved when I realized that the article was actually about cars. However, it led me to thinking about what lessons their story might have for congregations.

Leadership Gathering moves ahead amid challenges

Troubles half a world away are complicating United Methodist plans for the Leadership Gathering in Canada.

An Ebola outbreak in Congo has threatened access to visas, and the war-caused closure of the Strait of Hormuz has spiked fuel costs — making the gathering substantially more expensive.

Nevertheless, the Council of Bishops and other organizers are pressing forward with preparations for the unprecedented United Methodist event — set for Oct. 20-24 at Knox United Church in Calgary, Canada. They also are releasing a new survey intended to get more input for the event from youth and young adults — church members under age 35.

“This gathering is about the future of The United Methodist Church,” Stephanie Henry and Council of Bishops President Rubén Saenz Jr., said in a joint email response to UM News.

+ Pastor Charles celebrated the gift of participating in the “Spirituality and the Arts” retreat at a monastery in Schuyler, Nebraska, last week.

+ Pastor Charles enjoyed going to the county fair in Columbus, Nebraska.

+ Praise God for the needed rain last week.

+ Praise God for Pastor Charles celebrating Holy Communion at the monthly church ladies’ gathering at Karnella’s each month.

+ Praise God for the faithful service of our beloved pianist, Renae H., for our Scripture reader Shelley G., and for Bob S. who served as usher today.

Concerns

+ Praying for all who are dealing with medical challenges: Craig R., Judy C., Karnella S., Meryl B., Robin, Mark, John, Nancy B., Brad (Bob S.’ youngest brother), Mary Ann (Roy B.’s cousin), and Rick B. (fiancé of Rachel, Sandy D.’s daughter).

A nice time was had today at the July gathering of the United Women in Faith from Glenville UMC! Gloria S. provided the refreshments, and Belinda A. led the devotional.

The August gathering will be on August 12 at Good Samaritan - Hidden Creek.

"Take this rule: whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, or takes off your relish of spiritual things; in short, whatever increases the strength and authority of your body over your mind, that thing is sin to you, however innocent it may be in itself."
